Abstract

1387365 Moulding seat cushions CONTOURPEDIC CORP 8 June 1973 [8 June 1972] 27438/73 Heading B5A Apparatus for forming impressions of the gluteus maximus and back of a human for moulding seat cushions comprises a frame 10 having a first platform 26 and a second platform 28, a first flexible container 16 for forming an impression of the gluteus maximus region and containing particulate material 50 on the first platform and a second flexible container 18 for forming an impression of at least a portion of the back and connected to a reservoir 56 of particulate material 50 and mounted on the second platform. Spacers 12, 14 may be placed between frame 10 and containers 16, 18 respectively, and containers 16, 18 may be connected to a pump 20. Initially, seat container 16 is at atmospheric pressure and the particulate material for the back container 18 is in reservoir 56. Then, the person whose impression is to be taken is seated on seat container 16, which is then pressurized by pump 20 to raise him above the surface of the particulate material therein and then slowly vented to allow the material to flow and conform to the surface of the patient. After further reduction of pressure, the particles and container 16 become rigid. Container 18 is then pressurized, reservoir 56 raised to allow particulate material to flow downwardly and container 18 similarly moulded. A release material is then layed or sprayed, e.g. rubber sheet 22 or silicone sprays, on to the moulded containers and a cover 24 is positioned thereover. A rigid foam-forming composition, e.g. polyurethane is introduced into the cavity formed, foamed and cured to produce a positive impression of the human form, which is then used, together with cover 24 and a blank impression shell 10 to produce a negative impression cushion from a flexible foam-forming composition which may also be polyurethane. The particulate material used in the containers may be rigid solid or hollow spheres or granules or hollow, semi-rigid balls, e.g. polypropylene balls. The containers may be formed from flexible films, e.g. of polyurethane, polyvinyl or rubber coated nylon, heat-sealed at their edges.
