1,225,488. Moulding foamed articles with skins. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 10 Sept., 1968 [25 Sept., 1967], No. 43538/67. Heading B5A. Foamed plastics articles with an integral skin are formed by introducing a liquid, foam forming mixture into a mould cavity and allowing the mixture to foam and fill the cavity wherein at least part of the mould cavity is coated with a foam collapsing agent so that a surface layer of higher density than the body of the foam is formed at these parts. Preferably the liquid mixture is a flexible or semi-rigid polyurethane foam precursor and the foam collapsing agent is a silicone oil, particularly a polydimethylsiloxane carried on a permeable membrane, e.g. a sheet of polyurethane foam which lines the mould cavity. This foam layer is incorporated in the surface layer formed on the foamed article. The mould surface may be provided with a pattern such as simulated leather grain, stitching, piping or quilting which is reproduced on the foamed article.
