Abstract

138,718. Somers, M. Feb. 25, 1919. Limbs, artificial. - A foot comprises a member 1 forming the sole and heel, an instep member 3, a toe portion 2, and a leg member 4. The members 1, 3 are hinged separately to the toe portion at 5, 6. The leg member carries a pad 9 to receive the end of the stump, and is formed with a projecting tongue 10 extending into a slot in the member 1. A spindle 13 connects the tongue to the member 1 to form the ankle-joint. The joint is bushed and lined to provide for a downward yielding of the member 4 when the weight comes on the foot. The swinging movement of the ankle-joint is limited and cushioned bv the spring 16 and resilient buffers 18, 19, 20. A blade spring 7, secured to the member 1, passes under a bridgepiece 8 on the toe, to restore the toe after bending, and a metal strengthening-piece 21 is countersunk at the heel. In a modified construction, Fig. 4, the tongue 10 is formed separately from the leg portion and has a sliding spring.controlled connexion therewith. A second spindle 24, similar to the ankle-joint spindle 13, forms the connecting-link between the tongue and the leg, and limits the relative movement between them.
