Abstract

1387014 Ammonium phosphate fertilizer AMEX PHOSPHATES Inc 29 Feb 1972 9260/72 Heading C1A A method of making ammonium phosphate fertilizer from wet process phosphoric acid containing 58 to 68% by weight of P 2 O 5 comprises mixing the phosphoric acid with ammonia vapour by introducing each stream into the opposite arms of a tee-piece at a velocity of at least 500 fr./s. The mixed stream of composition 0À8 to 1À2 mols. of NH 3 per mole of phosphoric acid is then passed through a reaction zone, consisting of a U-tube conduit at 560‹ to 600‹ F. for a period of time of at least 0À10 secs. to effect the reaction and to produce a product comprising a hot melt ammonium polyphosphate product, which can then be quenched substantially immediately into an aqueous solution to form a liquid fertilizer solution. The ammonia is introduced into the tee mixer at approximately sonic velocity and at a temperature of 600‹ to 700‹ F., the flow rate being such that the residence time in the mixer is not more than 0À04 seconds before introduction into the reaction zone.
