[Also in Divisions B1, B2, B5, C1, C2 and F4] Particles e.g. fertilizers such as ammonium nitrate, urea, phosphates and calcium nitrate are coated by introducing the particles into an inclined fluidized bed in which they are carried along by the material of the bed and are cooled by heat exchange with the bed material or with injected volatile material and dried by the flow gas, the bed material optionally coating the particles. As shown, a trough shaped vessel A contains an inclined perforated partition 4; a pulverulent material 9 forming the bed which is fluidized by air from a blower 7. A concentrated solution e.g. of a fertilizer is sprayed through rose 13 and the droplets become entrained in the fluidized bed 9 and are cooled dried, solidified and optionally coated. Movement of the bed particles carries the entrained particles to outlet 16 where they are discharged together with the bed material from which they are separated. The separated bed material may be cooled in heat exchanger 43 before returning to the bed via pipe 21. The bed may also be cooled by injecting an atomized liquid or by a heat exchanger disposed in the bed.
