Abstract

1386677 Laminated surgical drape KIMBERLEY-CLARK CORP 24 May 1972 24522/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division A5] A surgical sheet comprises a flexible non- woven fibrous base sheet 10, a flexible fluidimpervious plastics film 11 bonded to at least part of one surface of the base sheet and a sheet of fluid-absorbent flexible open-cell plastics material 12 united to the outer surface of the film, the foam material having a surface frictional co-efficient of at least about 20 degrees, the film and the foam both being stable at temperatures up to at least 160‹ F. to permit sterilization of the surgical sheet. The base sheet may comprise outer layers of cellulose wadding and inner layers of highly drafted fibres disposed angularly to each other, a spaced pattern of adhesive being disposed between each fibre layer and its adjacent wadding layer with the fibres in each fibre layer partially embedded in and held by the adhesive of its adjacent adhesive layer and partially embedded in and held by the adhesive in the other adhesive layer where it extends between the fibres of its adjacent fibre layer and with a portion of the adhesive in both adhesive layers joined where the adhesive patterns are superimposed. The plastics film, which may cover only a portion of the base sheet, may be adhesively bonded thereto or extruded thereon and may comprise polyethylene, polypropylene, an ethylene-methylacrylate copolymer or polyvinyl chloride. The foam material which may be a polyester or polyether polyurethane foam and which may be coloured may be bonded to the film by adhesive or by fusing, or may be extruded on to the film.
