Abstract
1385887 Electrolytic cell IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 17 Oct 1972 [2 Nov 1971] 50832/71 Heading C7B An electrolytic cell (such as a cell for the electrolysis of alkali metal chloride solution with a flowing Hg cathode 13) has walls 4 closed at their tops by a cover 1 which is sealed thereto by a membrane 14. Each wall has a step 6, with the cover seated thereon and the membrane clamped along one edge to the flange and along its opposite edge to the upper surface of the cover. As illustrated, the cover and walls are of steel lined with ebonite at 2, 3, 5, 8 and 10. The membrane 14 may be of neoprene-proofed asbestos, e.g. faced on the underside with polyvinyl fluoride film, or may be of rubber similarly faced. If is clamped by angle members 17 and 19. Fig. 1 also shows an anode plate 29, e.g. of foraminite Ti with an active coating. The anode is mounted adjustably from a bridge piece 28 by means of a nut 36 on a threaded stem 35. The stem is fixed in the upper end of current lead-in rod 30 which passes through sealing means 32 in an opening in the cell cover and has a chlorine resistant casing 31. Bus-bar 33 is secured to the top of the current lead-in rod 30. A single cell may have a plurality of side by side covers (40), Fig.2 (not shown) with sealing members 44 clamped over the joints therebetween. The sealing of the cell allows it to be operated in a partly flooded condition, i.e. with the electrolyte in contact with the cover over part of the cell's length.
