Abstract

1384874 Easy-open can ends METAL BOX CO Ltd 28 Feb 1972 [2 March 1971] 5773/71 Heading B8D A weakening line or score 15 defining a removable panel 16 in a can end 1 is adapted to be be ruptured only after a succession of strain reversals set up in the residual of the line or score on rocking back and forth of a rigid pull tab 17 rigidly attached to the panel adjacent the score. The invention permits a greater thickness of residual material to be left at the score, e.g. 0À075-0À10 mm. for a tinplate end, as compared to score residual of about 0À05 mm. of conventional easy-open. The tab is attached to the panel by separate or integral rivets, welding, soldering, brazing, or cementing using coldsetting or thermo-setting resins to a raised annular bead 14 in which the score is formed. Modified wire loop-type tabs are illustrated in Figs. 8a, 8b and 8c (not shown). In another embodiment, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), a sheet metal tab 40 is secured to the panel by a globule of solder or resin 45 received in an apertured cupshaped formation 44. Modifications of this form of a tab are described, Figs. 11-14 (not shown).
