Abstract

1384633 Disc brakes; pad assemblies PONT-A-MOUSSON SA 4 Feb 1972 [12 Feb 1971] 5279/72 Heading F2E A disc brake has a fixed caliper 2 which carries on each side of the disc 1 a plurality (e.g. three), brake applying cylinders 9 and pistons 10, and there is also provided on each side of the disc 1 a respective support plate 12 mounted on withdrawable pins 11 carried by the caliper 2 which support plates 12 each have a plurality (e.g. three), of small friction pads 16 secured thereto. In the embodiment of Figs. 1-5, fluid actuation of the pistons 10 urges each support plate 12 towards the disc 1 to cause the pads 16 to brake disc 1, the pads 16 being adhered or moulded to back plates 17 which receive lugs 15 of the support plate 12. The pins 11 are detachably mounted in bosses 18 adjacent the ends of the caliper 2 and the plate 12 slides on the pins 11 during brake actuation, bushes 14 being interposed between the pins 11 and the support plate 12. Each pin 11 is held in the boss 18 by a spring 20 engaged in a recess 23 in the head of the pin 11. The pins 11 can be withdrawn by turning the spring 20 through a quarter of a revolution. This allows the support plates 12 to be rotated circumferentially and the pads 16 can be removed individually for replacement; during removal the pads 16 are tilted so as to pass between the rim 3 of a wheel and the outer face 6 of the disc 1. In the embodiment of Figs. 6-8 (not shown), the springs 20 are replaced by split rings (24 or 24a), secured to the boss (18) of the caliper (2) by one or more removable screws (27, 27a). In the embodiment of Fig. 9, each of the pins 11 located in the space B has a helical groove 30 into which the teat of a teat-screw 31 extends. The pin 11 has apertures selectively engageable by a spring-biased ball 35, and the pin 11 is axially displaced by rotation to retain or release the plate 12. In space A a screw 38 engaging a rack 39 on the pin 11 is rotatable to displace the pin 11. In the embodiment of Fig. 10 (not shown), each pin (11) in space B has a screw threaded portion (40) which is screwed into or out of a fixed nut (41). In space A each pin 11 has teeth (42) meshing with a gear wheel (45) which is drivable to rotate the pin (11) and move it axially. The embodiment of Fig. 11, has a support plate 48 which is fixed in position on the pins 11. It has apertures 49 in alignment with each brake applying piston so that the pistons extend through the support plate 48 and bear directly against each friction pad 16. Abutments 50 fixed to the support plate 48 take the braking reaction.
