Abstract

1384017 Testing compressible materials AUSTRIA TABAKWERKE AG 9 June 1972 [11 June 1971] 27102/72 Heading G1A A device for determining the density of compressible materials e.g. tobacco comprising a source of ionizing radiation 2 at least one detector 3, processing electronics 6, batteries 7, and a recording instrument 8 is designed so that on placing it on the compressible material one of its surfaces 1 presses into the material and the detector(s) only receives radiation that has passed through material whose compression is uniform. The source and detector(s) may be situated on one side of the surface Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), thereby utilizing reflected radiation, or, the source 2 may be mounted on a needle 4 within a retractable protective pipe 5 which slides inwardly against the action of a spring when placed on the material thereby utilizing radiation that has passed through a conical portion of the material. The radiation is received by the detectors 3 arranged concentrically about the needle 4. The surface 1 may also contain means for measuring the moisture content and/or the temperature of the material. An apparatus Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) is disclosed comprising a container for the compressible material and means for moving the device vertically into and out of the container.
