Lighting burners by frictional devices. - In a cigar or cigarette lighter or a lamp, the pyrophoric igniting-means are actuated by the depression of a sliding element and are arranged on a member rotatably mounted in a well or casing c within the petrol or like reservoir a of the igniter or lamp. In one form, the flint i is forced upwards by a spring k and an adjusting-screw l against a striking-wheel h, which is rotated, as a vertical sliding rod m is forced downwards in opposition to a spring n, by a rack r on the rod engaging a pinion o connected by a clutch with the striking-wheel h. The rod m may extend through a cover t having an opening w to permit sparks passing to the wick e. The flanged member d carrying the cover t and the igniting-means can be turned to bring the opening out of alinement with the wick e. The reservoir may be of annular form so that the flint can be adjusted from below. In a modification in which the rod m is mounted externally to the cover, the striking-wheel h is connected to an extension on the rod m by an arm or pair of arms. In a second modification, the striking-wheel is operated by a catgut or other cord passing round a pulley or guide connected to the sliding rod m and round two grooved pulleys connected to or formed in one with the striking-wheel, the ends of the cord being connected to a sleeve sliding on the flint tube and normally forced downwards by a spring.
