Abstract
1383566 Sintered fibre reinforced composites UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 7 Aug 1973 [7 Aug 1972] 36812/72 Headings C7D and C7F Sintered fibre reinforced metal composites are produced by coating the fibres and the metal powder with another metal which alloys with the powder metal to form a phase e.g. entectic, which has a melting temperature less than that of the powder or coating metal. The coated fibres and powder are then mixed and hot pressed. The fibres may be SiC or C, the metal powder Al or Cu and the coating metal Ag. The fibres and Al powder are separately coated with Ag from a solution containing 10-30 ml. 5% solution AgNO 3 , 30 ml. 7À5 solution NH 4 NO 3 , 20 ml. 5% solution dextrose, 20 ml. 10% solution sucrose and 80 ml. water. Ag was deposited by adding 10% KOH. The mixture of coated metal and fibres may be sheathed in Al, heated to 580‹C and rolled to thickness.
