Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture a boron structure by forming a boron layer on a metal base and dipping the resulting composite material in a soln. of halogen in alcohol to dissolve and remove the base.
CONSTITUTION: A boron coating layer is formed on a platelike or beltlike metal base such as Ni, Ni-Cr alloy, stainless steel, W, Ta, MO, Nb or Ti by vacuum deposition, sputtering, etc. to make a composite material. At this time, the metal base is heated to high temp., forming an about 20 μm thick metal boride layer between the metal base and the boron coating layer. The composite material is then dipped in a soln. of Br, Cl or I in anhydrous lower alcohol such as ethanol at 20W50°C. The treating soln. first dissolves the metal boride and continuously dissolves the metal base. Thus, a boron structure is obtd. consisting of β-rhombohedral, α-rhombohedral or tetragonal crystals or α- and β-rhombohedral mixed crystals.
