Abstract

Niobium substrates are rendered high resistant to elevated temps. by coating with a Nb/alloy metal silicide. Silicide powder contng. the alloying metal is applied to the surface (pref. suspended in a binder or sprayed on) to the desired thickness, then heated to fuse the silicide and cause reaction with the substrate forming a compact solid layer. Spec. when the coating contains Cr and Ti, the surface is finished by dipping in molten Sn/Al alloy to seal the pores and cracks.
