Abstract

PURPOSE:To form surface coated layers excellent in the hardwearing on a surface of a hard alloy substrate, by forming two or more hard layers with each layer formed as thinly as possible, and interposing a metal Ti layer between the hard layers thereby making the total of the layers be three or more. CONSTITUTION:The surface coat layers are formed on a hard alloy substrate to produce the surface coated hard alloy member. The surface coat layers are composed of at least three layers comprising two or more hard layers having a thickness of 0.2-3mu and one or more metal Ti layer having a thickness of 0.1- 1mu with the metal Ti layer interposed between the hard layers. The total thickness of the surface coat layers should be in the range of 2-15mu. These layers can be formed by conventional physical vapor deposition methods, chemical vapor deposition methods using a low temperature plasma, etc.
