Abstract

1383464 Timing ignition STP CORP 3 May 1973 [1 Nov 1972(2)] 21171/73 Heading F1B In a conventional I. C. engine ignition vacuum advance system, or a combined vacuum/centrifugal advance system, air is allowed to bleed into the vacuum system through a conduit having at least one opening in its wall to reduce the advance that would otherwise take place, by an amount to reduce the percentage of pollutants in the engine exhaust gases. Means are provided to prevent dirt entering the opening. Bleeding takes place at a bleed hole, or holes, 16, provided in the conduit 6 connecting the actuator to the engine inlet manifold, the hole 16 is formed in a circumferential recess 18 in a conduit 15 inserted in the conduit 6, and is covered by a foam rubber filter element 14. The recess allows the hole 16 to be spaced from the filter element. An orifice 20 between the hole 16 and the inlet manifold prevents excessive flow of air into the manifold.
