1383127 Aminoalkylation of tertiary amines BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 9 June 1972 [11 June 1971] 26936/72 Heading C2C Quaternary ammonium compounds of Formula IV where R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or methyl, R<SP>2</SP> is hydrogen, or unsubstituted or substituted alkyl of one to four carbon atoms, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are the same or different and each is unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, aralkyl or aryl, or R 3 and R 4 and the linking nitrogen atom form a heterocyclic ring, R<SP>5</SP> is alkyl of one to four carbon atoms and X is an inorganic or organic acid radical, are prepared by the reaction of an aziridine of formula with a proton donor of formula HX, and a tertiary amine of formula Acid radicals exemplified by X are chloride, bisulphate, formate, perchlorate and carbonate. Novel compounds are those of Formula IV in which R 1 is hydrogen.
