Abstract
1383032 Vehicle driving and steering gear BKALTENEGGER 15 Feb 1972 [26 Feb 1971] 7033/72 Heading B7H A vehicle 1 having non-deflectable wheels 2, 3, 4, 5 is provided with a motor 12 and a transmission unit 13 which drives the wheels at one side independently of the wheels at the other side, either forwardly, in reverse or idling, to provide a selective drive arrangement for steering. As described the input shaft 18 for the transmission unit 13 drives two separate gear trains (Fig. 3). The train at the left of Fig. 3 drives output shaft 44 (Fig. 5) and the train at the right of Fig. 3 drives output shaft 44<SP>1</SP>. Output shaft 44 drives the wheels 4, 5 via gears 58 to 62 and output shaft 44<SP>1</SP> drives the wheels 2, 3 via gears 58<SP>1</SP> to 62<SP>1</SP>. The two gear trains in the unit 13 are identical so that only one need be described. The input shaft 18 (Fig. 5) is provided with two gear-wheels 22, 23 which are in constant mesh with gear-wheels 24, 25 (Fig. 6) which can be coupled to shaft 28 by clutches 31 and 32. Thus by engaging either clutch 31 to 32 a first-gear or second-gear ratio can be selected. The shaft 28 carries gear-wheel 34 which meshes with gear-wheel 35 on shaft 36. The shaft 36 drives shaft 39 either directly through gears 30 and 38 and clutch 41, or indirectly through a reverse gear shaft 45 (Fig. 3), gear 48 and clutch 42. Thus by engaging either clutch 41 or 42 a forward or reverse drive can be selected. The shaft 39 drives output shaft 44 via gears 50, 43. All the clutches are hydraulically operated and are supplied with pressure fluid from a pump 63 (Fig. 5) on the input shaft 18. In operation the vehicle can be driven in a straight line, either forwardly or in reverse, at first gear or second gear speeds, or can be driven along a curve by driving the wheels at one side in first gear and the wheels at the other side in second gear. Alternatively the vehicle can be turned by driving the wheels at one side forwardly and the wheels at the other side in reverse. The wheels 2, 3, 4, 5 may be ground engaging wheels (Fig. 1) or the drive wheels for an endless track 11 (Fig. 3).
