Abstract

1296666 Endless-track vehicle transmissions VOITH GETRIEBE KG 16 March 1970 [14 March 1969] 12466/70 Addition to 1225006 Heading B7H In a track-laying vehicle of the type incorporating a backing shaft system whose rotation causes the vehicle to follow a curved path, an hydrostatic steering transmission operates effectively in parallel with an hydrodynamic brake and differential transmission which form integers of a variable drive combination for driving the backing shaft system. In one embodiment (Fig. 1), an engine 1 drives track sprockets 8, 9 through differentials 6, 7 driven from a gear-box 2 via a power-division transmission 3. Steering is effected by rotation of a backing shaft 14 connected via respective gear trains 17, 16, 15, 12 and 19, 18, 13 to differentials 6, 7. The direction of rotation of shaft 14 is determined by operation of one or other of two hydrodynamic brakes 28, 29 whose rotors are rotated in opposite senses from a steering drive shaft 20 and epicyclic gear-sets 24, 25. Steering is assisted by the hydrostatic steering transmission which embodies a variable delivery pump 155, and motor 156. The arrangement is such that (i) at large-radius steering, when brakes 28, 29 are least efficient, the hydrostatic transmission effectively rotates the backing shaft, while (ii) at small radius steering, brakes 28, 29 exercise effective rotation of shaft 14. In a second embodiment (Fig. 7), two backing shafts 14a, 14b have an interposed bevel gear reversing mechanism. Also, there is only a single hydrodynamic brake 29 and epicyclic gear-set 25. A double clutch 141 has hollow output shafts 147, 148 connected to different bevel gears of the reversing mechanism. The hydrostatic steering transmission functions in a manner similar to that of the first embodiment.
