Abstract

1382446 Adjustable seat backrests BIRNAM PRODUCTS Ltd 31 Jan 1973 [8 Feb 1972 29 June 1972] 5713/72 Heading A4J 30416/72 [Also in Division E2] In a mechanism for adjusting the inclination of the backrest of a vehicle seat, a seat plate 15 and a backrest plate 20 are pivotally connected at 21, the backrest plate 20 is provided with a rack in the form of a curved row of teeth 33 centred on the pivot axis 21 and the seat plate 15 is provided with a linearly moveable slide 37 having teeth 40 biased into engagement with the rack by a spring 42 and moveable out of engagement by a member 47 pivotally connected to the seat plate and having teeth 49 co-operating with a rack 46 on the slide. The teeth 49 and rack 46 may be replaced by an eccentric cam lobe (74), Fig. 4, (not shown) on the member 47 engaged in a recess in the slide or by a pin (81), Fig. 5, (not shown) on the slide engaged between a pair of eccentric parallel arms (84) in the member 47. The mechanisms at each side of a seat may be interconnected by a rod 48 or a Bowden cable (64), Fig. 3, (not shown). In the modification shown in Fig. 6, linear movement of the slide 137 is angularly offset from the pivot axis 121 of the two plates and the slide is urged into mesh with the rack 133 by a wedge 173 engaged with a wedge surface 138 in the slide, movement of the wedge into and out of engagement with the slide being effected by co-operating parts on the wedge and member 147.
