Abstract

1382236 Making threaded components ARCHIBALD KENRICK & SONS Ltd 13 Jan 1972 [18 Dec 1970] 60154/70 Heading B3A [Also in Division F2] A method of making a component 3, comprising a stem 1 having a part in the form of a nut 3 intermediate its ends and externally screw-threaded at least at one side of the nut, includes forming the stem and nut as separate parts, assembling the nut to the stem so that it is held by a friction fit, and then forming a screw-thread 6. A metal rod is turned on a lathe to produce reduced extremities 5, 8 and grooves 9, 10. The stem is cut from the rod and a knurled band (2), Fig. 1 (not shown), is formed by rolling. The nut 3, which has a plain bore, is pressed on to the knurled band and finally the screw-thread 6 is rolled on to the stem. The component may be a pivot pin for a swivelling castor and is screwed into an article of furniture by the thread 6. The swivelling assembly is secured by a circlip in one of the grooves. In an alternative embodiment, the stem is threaded on each side of the nut, e.g. with threads of opposite hand.
