Abstract
1382034 In situ gasification of coal UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION 8 May 1973 [30 May 1972] 21836/73 Heading C5E Synthetic natural gas is produced in situ by (a) fracturing by explosive charges a subterranean coal deposit situated beneath the water table at a depth yielding a hydrostatic pressure of at least 500 p.s.i. to provide a deep bed of broken coal disposed in a closed cavity formed by undisturbed portions of the formation, (b) providing an inlet conduit and an outlet conduit communicating with the upper and lower portions respectively of the coal bed, (c) injecting oxygen and fuel through the inlet conduit and igniting the upper portion of the bed while closing the outlet conduit to balance the hydrostatic pressure, (c) injecting water through the inlet conduit to react with the coal together with sufficient oxygen to maintain combustion to form a reaction zone comprising an upper high temperature, e.g. 700 K. region and a lower temperature region beneath, (d) withdrawing a methane-containing product gas through the outlet conduit. The product gas is passed to a methanator to covert residual CO 2 .
