Abstract

1381350 Bituminous emulsions AKZONA Inc 5 May 1972 [6 May 1971] 21077/72 Heading B1V [Also in Division C3] Cationic bituminous emulsions comprise a bituminous material, water and (a) a monoquaternary compound of the formula (I) in which R is alkyl or alkenyl (C 8-22 ), R<SP>1</SP> is -(-CH 2 CH 2 O-) a -H or (I)'; R<SP>2</SP> is -(-CH 2 CH 2 O-) b -H or (I)" wherein a and b are 1-10 and the sum of a and b is 2-10; R 3 is alkyl (C 1-6 ); and A is an anion; or (b) a polyquaternary ammonium compound of the formula (II) wherein R is as above; R 4 is alkyl (C 1-6 ), (-a) -(-CH 2 CH 2 O-)- a H or (I)'; R 6 is alkyl (C 1-6 ), -(-CH 2 CH 2 O-)- b H or (I)"; R 5 is alkyl (C 1-6 ), (-a) -(-OH 2 CH 2 O-)- o H or (I)"'; R 7 is alkyl (C 1-6 ), -(-CH 2 CH 2 O-)- d H or (II)"; R 8 is alkyl (C 1-6 ), -(-CH 2 CH 2 O-)- e H or (II)"' wherein a, b, c, d and e is 1-20, w is 2-4 and p is (m+1), m being 1 or 2 and A is an anion. The examples refer to the use of N-tallow-N,N,N',N',N'-pentamethyl trimethyl diammonium dichloride; N- oleyl-N-methyl, N,N-bis-hydroxyethyl quaternary ammonium chloride; N-tallow trimethylene diammonium dichloride ethoxylated with 3 moles of ethylene oxide; N-tallow N-trimethylene amino-N'-trimethylene amino-N,N, N,'N',N",N",N"-heptylmethyl triquaternary ammonium trichloride; and N-tallow-N-propoxy N,N',N',N'-tetramethyl trimethylene diammonium dichloride.
