Abstract

1380724 Finishing fabrics ASHFIELD DYEING & FINISHING CO Ltd 4 May 1972 [5 May 1971] 13274/71 Heading D1S [Also in Division B6] A decorated embossed fabric is produced by masking and applying a compressing force to portions of the fabric disposed in the pattern of the depressed portions of a chosen embossment pattern so that the compressed portions of the fabric are disposed below the the uncompressed unmasked portions of the fabric to a source of vapourisable dyestuff and setting the conditions to cause the dyestuff to vapourize and transfer to the fabric, and unmasking and removing the compressing force from the depressed portions. As shown, a stencil 1 having cut-outs 2 is placed on the fabric 3 and a dyestuff-coated surface 5 of a transfer sheet 4 is placed on the stencil 1. The assembly is compressed between plates 8, 9 of an hydraulic or screw press. By application of heat and/or a chemical treatment, the dyestuff adjacent the uncompressed portions 6 of the fabric is vapourized and the fabric is set in the embossment pattern. The stencil 1 may be an openwork textile fabric, e.g. a piece of lace or crochet work. The dyestuff may be aqueous or non-aqueous and may be sublimable, i.e. able to pass from the solid phase to the gaseous phase either without an intermediate liquid phase or with a liquid phase extending oven an extremely small temperature range.
