Abstract

1380645 Moulding foamed articles CONTINENTAL GUMMI-WERKE AG 12 Jan 1972 [12 Jan 1971] 1370/72 Heading B5A A method of obviating " dome " formation when producing foamed polyurethane blocks comprises using an open topped mould having means for producing a partial vacuum at the edge regions of the mould, i.e. at the edges of the rising foam, relative to the central area. The vacuum counteracts effects such as skin formation and surface tension of the rising foam and produces a block having a flat top. The embodiment shown in Fig. 2 has a stationary mould 1, and a blower 4 which extracts air from the area above surface 2<SP>1</SP> of the foam. A vertically displaceable conduit 5 guides the air flow as shown and produces curved regions 3 at the edges of the block. An induction pipe 6 having an associated valve controls the degree of vacuum produced. Fig. 3 shows apparatus for the continuous production of foamed webs. A conveyer having moving side and base mould walls has fixed conduits 10 at each side spaced from the foam surface by a gap 9, and air entering through the gap is extracted by a fan 12. Fig. 5 shows an alternative arrangement for continuous production in which a closed arrangement is used to continuously recirculate air extracted from the edges of the block by blower 5. A baffle 18 guides the air flow at the edges of the block. In addition to producing flat topped blocks, the method of the invention may be used to produce blocks having ribs on their upper surface.
