Abstract

1380525 Automatic control of temperature IMPULSPHYSIK GmbH 13 Feb 1973 7063/73 Heading G3R [Also in Divisions C7, H2, and H3-H5] Apparatus for hardening the surface of a steel workpiece 20 by high frequency induction heating comprises an oscillator valve 3, a cavity resonator 1 and an inductor 17 coupled to the resonator by a loop 16. The radiation emitted by the heated workpiece is detected by a photo-diode 54 after passing through a selected orange, green or blue filter 53. The pulse produced by the diode in the circuit 55, 56 is amplified and fed to the grid of a thyratron 59 thereby switching on the thyratron and controlling the output pulse width of the valve 3. A constant hardening temperature of the workpiece is therefore maintained since any increase or decrease of temperature above or below that determined by selection of the filter 53 causes a corresponding decrease of increase in the output pulse width of the valve 3 and consequently a decrease or increase in the heating of the workpiece.
