Abstract

1380462 Stuffing-boxes MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG AG 22 March 1972 [24 March 1971] 13510/72 Heading F2B In a stuffing-box packing for an internal combustion engine piston-rod 4 where it passes through a partition 1 separating a chamber 2 below the piston from the driving mechanism compartment 3 and comprising axially adjacent chamber rings 16-21 forming chambers housing sealing and/or scraper rings 9-15, a combined sealing and scraper ring 5, 6 formed by ring segments is located at each end of the packing and the butt joints or clearances between the ring segments of rings 5 and 6 are covered on the side nearest the axial end of the packing by sealing means 43, 44, which may be diaphragm rings of flexible material. The chamber rings 16-21 and holding rings 22, 23 are clamped together by screws 33 and relatively located by shoulders 34-37. The rings 5 and 6 each have an outer scraping edge 7, 8; the rings 9-13 are scraper rings, the rings 14, 15 are sealing rings and all the rings are segmental and urged against the rod by garter springs 24-32. Impurities removed by the scraper ring 9 are led to a drain duct 38. Oil removed by the rings 10-13 is returned to the lubricating system via a collecting chamber 39 and duct 40. The space 41 between the sealing rings 14 and 15 is connected to atmosphere via a pipe 42. Cleansing medium, e.g. compressed air, may be introduced through pipe 42.
