Abstract

1379495 Cryogenic cables COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE 7 April 1972 [14 April 1971] 16268/72 Headings H1A and A4D A cryocable comprises an internal, electrically conductive tube 3, Fig. 1 or 41, Fig. 3, a fluid tight external tube 7 or 40 surrounding the inner tube, means, e.g. liquid helium 2 flowing through the inner tube to cool at least one of the tubes, means, e.g. a powder 10 containing mainly alumina for thermally insulating at least the internal tube from outside conditions and a volume of helium gas at 10<SP>-5</SP> to 10<SP>-2</SP> Torr between the tubes to electrically insulate them from each other. A metal thermal screen 8 may be provided between the two tubes. In Fig. 1 tube 3 consists of a body of aluminium containing conductors 4 each consisting of strands of super-conductive material secured to strands of steel; tube 3 may be wrapped in an insulating tape, e.g. of ethylene-glycol polyterephthalate. In Fig. 3 internal tube 41 has super-conductive material on the outer surface of a cylindrical conductor while outer tube 40 has super-conductive material on the inner surface of a cylindrical conductor. Three identical conductor arrangements are provided in Fig. 3 to give a three phase cable.
