Abstract

1371818 Cryocable COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE 17 Jan 1972 [21 Jan 1971] 2222/72 Headings H1A and A4D A cryocable comprises an inner structure 1 made up of a super-conductive layer 4, e.g. of Nb and a conductive layer 3, e.g. of Cu or Al, the two layers being electrically connected, e.g. by a filament 5 of resistive material so that if layer 4 passes from its super-conductive to its normally conductive state, the current flows via the electrical connection into the layer 3. In an alternative form filament 5 is insulating and discrete electrical connections are provided, axially spaced between the two layers. Conductors 19, 20 are attached at axially spaced intervals to filament 5 or to the discrete connections whereby the blocking of the super-conductor layer can be detected. A central perforated conduit 16, e.g. of synthetic material, carries cryogenic fluid and a helically wound strip of copper 14 provides thermal connection between the fluid and layer 3. The fluid also passes through layer 3 to contact layer 4. The inner structure 1 is insulated by polyethylene tape 8 on which there is an outer structure having a super-conductive layer 9, filament 10, conductive layer 11 and a conduit 12 for cryogenic fluid. Contact wires 21, 22 are provided for detecting blocking of the super-conductor in the outer structure.
