Abstract

1285844 Electromagnet coils COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 28 April 1971 [15 May 1970] 11814/7l Heading H1P A superconductor coil (Fig. 1) comprises plural layers 1 of consecutive turns of e.g. Nb-Ti wire or strip 2 separated by high thermal conductivity metallic e.g. pure annealed copper filaments 3 electrically insulated by e.g. polyester, polyvinyl acetal or epoxy varnish. The wires and filaments may be flattened for better thermal contact, and one or both ends of the filaments of a layer may be stripped of insulation and embedded in a metallic bead 4 immersed in liquefied gas e.g. He, with an interruption at 5 to prevent closed loops. Alternatively (Fig. 2) the turns are wound in wafers 6, 7 separated by insulated radial filaments 3 whose extremities may be embedded in beads 4 with interruption 5. The liquefied gas may be force circulated by ducting to the extremities of the filaments, and the insulant may be loaded with thermally conductive powder e.g. Cu or SiO 2 .
