Abstract

1379459 Valves CONTROLS CO OF AMERICA 2 March 1972 [29 March 1971] 9812/72 Heading F2V A thermostatic expansion valve for use in refrigeration systems having means for rapid equalization of the pressure in the high and low pressure sides of the system comprises a body 10 provided with inlet port 12 and outlet port 14, a valve 16 biased by a spring 20 against a seat 18 and actuated through push-pins 56 and collar 28, 30 by a diaphragm 40 which has one side subject to pressure which is a function of evaporator outlet temperature and its other side subject to pressure in the valve outlet. The said means constitutes a by-pass valve which comprises ports 38 in a chamber 36 in the valve in communication with the inlet port which are controlled by the collar 28, 30 normally held closed by the diaphragm acting through the push pins 56. The by-pass valve is operated when the valve 16 abuts the seat 18 and the evaporator warms up after compressor shutdown sufficient for the pressures across the diaphragm to become balanced and the chamber pressure to open the ports. The pressure is transmitted to the diaphragm via a thermal-sensing bulb 50, and capillary tube 52. In an alternative embodiment the collar is dispensed with and the ports are closed by the push-pins which act as closure members. Other valve means, such as a ball, interposed between the push pin and the port, are suggested.
