Abstract

1379313 Cinematography EASTMAN KODAK CO 1 March 1972 [1 March 1971] 9545/72 Heading G2E In a reel-to-reel web handling apparatus e.g. a cine projection, a flanged supply reel 10 carrying film F is supported on a vertical shaft 26 to which is applied a retarding force by a slip clutch, the magnitude of the force being dependent on the weight of the film F on the reel 10. As shown in Fig.3 a drive belt 78 rotates a pulley 70 abutted by thrust washers 72, 74 and held axially by plate 68 and ring 76. A lower clutch ring 104 having a friction surface 106 has slots 108 aligned with prongs 90 and a further slot (110), Fig.2 (not shown) aligned with a key 86 on the pulley 70. A retaining ring 92 holds the clutch ring 104 and pulley 70 together. Upper clutch ring 98 is attached to shaft 26 and contacts surface 106. A cap 112 fitted with prongs 114 passing through slots 102 is biased by spring 118 so that the prongs 15 urge the clutch rings 98, 104 together, the force being dependent on the weight of the film F on the reel 10. For reverse winding the clutch is by-passed by energizing solenoid 124 which moves the cap 112 upwards so that prongs engage the flat rather than the inclined faces of wedges 84. The drive therefore passes from the pulley 70 via prongs 114 to clutch ring 98 and hence to spindle 26.
