Abstract

1378948 Cyano-substituted-N-phenoxyethyl diamines BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 10 May 1973 [10 May 1972] 21796/72 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] Compounds of formula where R is a hydrocarbyl group derived from a polyolefin, R<SP>1</SP> is an amino group, R<SP>2</SP> is H or C 1-20 alkyl, one of A and B is -CN and the other is H, may be prepared by reacting the hydrocarbyl substituted phenol with an alkali metal, and reacting the product with a 1,2-dihalopropionitrile and subsequently with a diamine of formula HNR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>. The group R may be derived from a polymer of ethylene, propylene, isobutylene or 4-methylpentene-1, particularly polyisobutylene. The diamine may be N,N-dimethyl propylene diamine. The products may be used as detergent additives in gasolines.
