Abstract

1378709 Polyolefin derivatives BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 10 May 1973 [10 May 1972] 21797/72 Heading C3P [Also in Divisions C4-C5] Compounds of formula where R is an alkenyl group derived from a polyolefin, R<SP>2</SP> is a C 1-10 alkylene group, R<SP>3</SP> is hydrogen or C 1-20 alkyl, one of A and B is -CN and the other is hydrogen, may be prepared by reacting a 1,2-dihalopropionitrile with a diamine of formula H 2 NR<SP>2</SP>N(R<SP>3</SP>) 2 and reacting the product with an alkenyl halide RX where X is halogen. The polyolefin may be a polymer of ethylene, propylene, isobutylene or 4-methylpentene-1, particularly polyisobutylene. The nitrile may be dibromopropionitrile, which may be reacting with alkali, e.g. sodium or potassium hydroxide,- before reacting with the amine, preferably in the presence of an alkali carbonate, e.g. sodium carbonate. The products may be used as detergent additives in gasolines. In an example α,#-dibromopropionitrile is reacted with sodium hydroxide, N,N-dimethylpropylenediamine and polyisobutenyl chloride.
