Abstract
1378931 Alginate sponges FREEZE DRY PRODUCTS Inc 3 Jan 1972 85/72 Headings C3C and C3U A sponge that is open-celled, porous, waterabsorbent and water-disintegrative comprises the constituents of at least one water-soluble alginate, e.g. sodium alginate, and at least one water-insoluble alginate, e.g. calcium alginate, (i.e. the alginate contains cations of types which would impart water-solubility and insolubility respectively to the alginate). The sponge may be made by freezing an aqueous dispersion of the constituents of the above two alginates and then sublimating the ice to form the sponge. The sponge may be rehydrated to a moisture content of 10-90% by wt. and then compressed to collapse a portion of the cells, and then dried. In Example I a gel was prepared by slurrying aqueous alginic acid with isopropyl alcohol, neutralizing a part of the acid with calcium carbonate and the remainder with sodium bicarbonate, the resultant product was dried, milled and dispersed in water to form a gel which was then frozen and dried to form a sponge.
