Abstract

1378780 Lamp bases WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 3 Feb 1972 [22 March 1971 17 Dec 1971] 5028/72 Heading H2E A lamp base comprises a hollow metal sleeve 21 adapted to be sealed to the glass envelope 15 of the lamp and having an apertured flange 22 extending laterally across its outer end and a circumferentially extending indentation 23 axially spaced from the flange, and a preformed insulator 24 having a rim 25 clamped against the flange by the indentation and a portion 26, 27 extending through the aperture; the portion 26, 27 having a hole 28 through it and a metal contact 30 secured to a flat end face of the portion. The shell 21 is cemented to the envelope and one lead wire 18 is welded to the shell while the other lead wire 19 extends through the hole 28 and is clamped against and by the contact 30 which is in the form of an end cap. The shell may have screw threads formed thereon or may have bayonet pins (42) or leaf springs (56). In other embodiments the end contact 30 has a central hole through which the lead wire 19 passes and is soldered to the contact, which may have a taper (132) around its hole nesting in a flared cavity (129a) in the insulator for accommodating the solder; alternatively the contact may be in the form of a washer (25) with a tapered central portion, or in the form of an eyelet (40d) extending through the hole in the insulator. In another embodiment (Fig. 16, not shown), the extending portion of the insulator is formed with two bosses (51, 27g) each with a respective hole (52, 28g) and contact (53, 33) for connection to leads of a three-light lamp.
