Abstract

1378675 Benzoylacetanilides; intermediates therefor AGFA-GEVAERT 10 March 1972 [25 March 1971] 11341/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division G2] The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein Ar represents phenyl which may be substituted, X represents H or a substituent that exhibits two equivalent character and splits off on colour development and R represents a straight or branched-chain C 1 -C 20 alkyl group, the molecule comprising at least one C 5 -C 20 straight or branched-chain alkyl group. In examples, specified compounds are obtained by reacting an appropriate benzoyl acetic acid ester with an appropriate p-amino-benzoic acid derivative. They are useful as colour couplers. 2-Hexadecyloxy-4-carboxyaniline is obtained by reduction of the corresponding nitro compound which is itself obtained by treating 2- hydroxy-4-carbomethoxy-nitrobenzene with hexadecylbromide and hydrolyzing the product with KOH. 2-Methoxy-4-carboxyaniline is obtained by reduction of the corresponding nitro compound which is itself obtained by hydrolysis of its methyl ester.
