Abstract
1378511 Welding by fusion BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd 4 Feb 1972 [4 Feb 1971] 3985/71 Heading B3R [Also in Division E2] In a gas-shielded, consumable electrode, arc welding torch comprising a handle/body 2, an electrode guiding head 3 and a gas nozzle 14, the gas nozzle is held in place on the head by means of a leaf spring 6 in the form of a gapped hollow prism of substantially polygonal crosssection, the spring being interposed in a flexed condition between internal and external surfaces respectively of the nozzle and the head. In the MIG torch of Fig. 1, the nozzle inner surface 16 has a leading-in chamfer 18. The diameter of said inner surface is such as to provide a close fit on the major external surface of the head 3, but is smaller than the unflexed maximum cross-sectional dimension of the spring. The latter is seated in a shallow groove 4 of the head prior to pushing the nozzle over the spring and head up to abutment with the body 2. In the dip-transfer MIG torch of Fig. 3, the head is held in a holder 20 of the body 2 and comprises a gas and electrode feed tubular member 26 insulated by a sleeve 24 from a portion 22. The nozzle is of aluminium alloy. The spring is fitted into the nozzle up to a step 30 of the inner surface 16 thereof before pushing the nozzle over the head up to a step of the portion 22. In the spray transfer MIG torch of Fig. 4 (not shown), the nozzle is of copper, and to prevent arcing between the nozzle and the tubular member 26 an insulating sleeve (32) is provided inside the nozzle and acts as a stop for the spring.
