Abstract

1378366 Spot-type disc brakes; pad-mounting KNORR-BREMSE GmbH 17 May 1973 [25 May 1972] 23679/73 Heading F2E In a spot-type disc brake where the ultimate actuator is a brake linkage (e.g. a railway vehicle brake), the brake pads are connected by an articulated coupling to inhibit tilting of the pads towards one another in circumferential directions relative to the disc. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, each brake pad 6, 7, is connected indirectly to the brake linkage 2 in the manner of a universal joint by a vertical pivot 10 and an intermediate member 8, which is pivoted in turn horizontally, at 9, to the linkage 2. Outside the outermost lugs of the backing plates 6 are located, on the same pivot 10, the forked end portions of a curved lever arm 12 or 13 of a toggle lever 11, the lever arms being connected by a pivot 14 which is parallel to the vertical pivots 10. Thus, tilting of the brake pads towards each other, in the plane of Fig. 3, is prevented, whatever the direction of rotation of the disc 4. Normally the vehicle axle 3 is parallel to the vehicle superstructure 1 (Fig. 1, not shown), but where these are relatively oblique, as shown in Fig. 3, re-orientation of the brake pads is permitted by providing a clearance between the lever arm forked ends and the adjacent backing plate lugs. Relative tilting, however, is still prevented. In Figs. 4 and 5 each lever arm of the toggle lever 20 is connected by two vertical pivots 24 to an extended intermediate member 22, 21, (and thus only indirectly to the adjacent brake pad), the pivots 24 being parallel to pivots 10 and 14. In Figs. 7 and 8 the connections of the lever arms to the brake pads 6, 7, and intermediate members 8 are as in Fig. 2, except that no clearance between forked ends and backing plate lugs is provided: instead, the lever arms 33, 34 are connected by a parallelogram linkage 32, 35, 36.
