Abstract
1378305 Making briefs BONDS-WEAR PTY Ltd 27 March 1972 [30 March 1971] 14192/72 Heading A3V [Also in Division D1] Briefs are made by cutting a web of fabric lengthwise to obtain strips of profiled garment blanks; forming a transverse line of slits between successive blanks and along the sides of a gusset flap on each blank; gripping the leading edge of the first blank under grippers 6/3 on a forming board 61 and tensioning the blank to position the junction of the first and a second blank under the grippers of a second forming board there being a plurality of such forming boards equally spaced along an intermittently driven first conveyor on which they are supported and driven by shafts 6/12 and chains 6/13; completely severing the two blanks and turning the forming board through 180‹ by cam means acting on an arm 6/14 thereby folding the blank over the sharp end of the wedge-shaped forming board; applying brushes to the now-uppermost surface of the blank to engage its free edge under grippers 6/3 on the other face of the forming board;; aligning and seaming the upper and lower side edges of the blank to form the side seams of the finished briefs; completely severing the gusset flap and temporarily glueing it into position on the crotch portion of the finished briefs; forming a closed elastic waistband on the apparatus described in Specification 1,374,030 and applying the waistband round the waist opening of the blank; temporarily heat sealing the preglued waistband into position; transferring the half-finished briefs from their forming board to a body form C1 on a second endless conveyor intermittently driven in synchronism with the first using pneumatically operated arms and grippers; permanently sewing the elastic waistband in place; inverting the body form and trimming and finishing each leg opening of the briefs by a mechanism comprising a sewing machine on a carrier C11 which describes a circle about a central locating shaft C8 while accommodating the wavy profile of the leg opening by means of a cam and follower C26, C27 elastic thread from a spool C35 being thereby sewn into the leg opening; and stripping the finished briefs from the body form.
