Abstract

1378002 End face seals KARL SCHMIDT KG 22 Nov 1971 54179/71 Heading F2B The resilient secondary seals 3, 6 in an end face seal are each made of a different crosssection and provided with-annular sealing beads, a replaceable helical spring 3b or 6d being pressed into a groove defining the mouth of a slot 3c or 6f of predetermined depth. The secondary seals may be made of P.T.F.E. As shown, one of these seals 3, Fig. 2, is of circular cross-section and is provided with sealing beads 3a and an inclined slot 3c having at its mouth a groove 3d of width less than the diameter of the turns of the spring 3b. Another one of these seals 6, Fig. 3, is of rectangular cross-section and is provided with sealing beads 6a, 6b and 6c and two slots 6f with associated springs 6d. An additional seal 16 may be provided in which the sealing beads 16b are pressed apart by an annular projection 17 on a main seal retaining member 11. The opposing main seal retaining member 4 is axially movable against springs 9 and slides within the secondary seal 6.
