Abstract
1377926 Helically wound pipe STEWARD PLASTICS Inc 3 April 1973 [30 Aug 1972] 15954/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division F2] Apparatus 10 for making helically wound plastics tubing 24 comprises means 12 for extruding a plastic strip 14 and winding means 22 for helically winding the strip with overlapping heat-bonded edges 18, 20. The winding means 22 includes a set of driven rolls 30 cantilevered-from a support head 34, each roll being inclined tangentially with respect to the axis 32. As shown, there are four rolls 30, all driven in the same direction. The extruded strip 14 has a central, longitudinal rib 16 on one face which may be rolled flat by a roller 44 at sections 40 of the tube, e.g. to provide a plain end surface where the tube is to be cut, 42. The tube is cooled as it comes off the rolls 30 by internal and external water cooling sprays (52), (Fig. 2, not shown), 50, the water collecting in a trough into which the tube 24 is discharged.
