Abstract
1377807 Air cushion vehicles; endless-track vehicles G G HANSARD 25 May 1973 [26 Feb 1972 9 Nov 1972] 8978/72 and 51651/72 Headings B7H and B7K [Also in Division F2] A device comprises a surface having a slot 30, Fig. 2, containing an endless flexible sealing strip 38 the face of which can be acted upon by fluid pressure to press it towards a confronting surface 12. Five such hollow rubber or plastics strips are mounted in slots in the undersurface of a pallet 10, Fig. 1. Fluid pressure is supplied by lines 32, 44 to the strip to force it towards the surface 12 (which may have a depression as shown in chain lines) and to fill a pocket 46 with fluid. A film of fluid may be formed under the strip as well. In a modification, strips are faced with abrasive-resistant material or foam plastics or rubber. In a multi-strip arrangement as in Fig. 1, fluid may be supplied to only some pockets or at different pressures to different pockets thus tilting the load if desired. The pockets may be located to support a load on a ship slipway. The strip could be of solid rectangular form in a rectangular groove or be of closed hollow construction. The fluid may act only on the sides of the strip. A constant pressure may be permanently applied. If the supporting surface is porous, the modification of Figs. 5 and 6, may be used. The resilient strips 300 are contained in square or circular pads 200 located above the lower reach of an endless belt 420. Fluid is supplied to a chamber 260 and thence both through passages 290, 280 to pockets 220 and through porous members 320, 340, to the undersurface of the belt 420. A load-carrying platform 480 is bolted to a frame 240. For a vehicle, two such tracks as above are provided. The belts may be of rubber backed by stainless steel sheet. The bearing surfaces of the pads and frame may be coated with p.t.f.e. The strips could be located directly in a load or in grooves in the supporting surface. In a rotary bearing the strips could be annular. The fluid pressure may be supplied from different sources to the pockets and strips. The fluid may be water or oil or air. The bearing may be used on fluid-supported land-vehicles or air-cushion amphibious craft.
