Abstract

1,266,331. Air cushion vehicles; railway systems; tracks. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 27 Feb., 1969 [2 March, 1968], No. 10268/68. Headings B7K and B7L. [Also in Divisions B8 and F2] In a load supporting device, at least one fluidcushion lifting pad which is supplied with pressurized fluid, and a member of compliant elastomeric material providing a ground-effect surface, have a fluid cushion formed therebetween. The pad has a porous member 19, Fig. 2, which may be sintered stainless steel for example and may be supported by a spring 37, Fig. 5. The member of compliant elastomeric material may be reinforced by a sheet 54, Fig. 7, of aluminium, for example. The pads may be used on pallets, a transport cradle for a gas turbine engine, a television camera and a tracked hovercraft, for example. The tracked hovercraft 43, Fig. 6, is supported on a track 44 having arms, each of which terminate in a rectangular section member 45 carrying strips 44, 47 and 48 of resilient material. The hovercraft is supported vertically by means of pads 50, 52 and is supported laterally by pads 51.
