Abstract

1377752 Gas cleaner OXY-DRY INTERNATIONAL Ltd 17 March 1972 [18 March 1971] 7216/71 Heading B1R Particulate matter is separated from a gaseous stream, e.g. air, moving at a given flow rate by passing the stream via an inlet 12 into a hood 10 which comprises an open hood base and hood walls defining a chamber, the hood being positioned relative to a receptacle 16 containing liquid 18, e.g. water, such that the open base is above the level of the liquid but the hood walls are partially within the receptacle with the chamber walls being spaced from the walls of the receptacle, the liquid level being adjusted at static conditions to be at a distance not exceeding about 3/8 inch from the open hood base and presenting a path for the gaseous stream to exit to the atmosphere from the open base, the chamber being sized to assist in adjusting the velocity of the gaseous stream at the open base to between about 1300 and 3000 ft./min. the adjustment of the distance of the open base from the liquid level and the selection of the size of the chamber being such that, as a combined effect, relatively high particle separation efficiency is obtained without substantially reducing the throughput of the gaseous stream. As shown in Fig. 3, the hood 30 may be rectangular in shape and may be flared from its inlet to the open base 32. The receptacle 34 may rest on a floor support 42 which may have levelling means 44, and is separable therefrom. Baffle means may be at least partially submerged in the particulate matter entrapping liquid and positioned between the walls of the hood and the receptacle walls to define a zone, the liquid levelling means being operatively positioned in the zone. The receptacle may be sized to provide a distance between its walls and the walls of the hood such that the turbulence of the liquid caused by the escaping gaseous stream is at a minimum at the receptacle walls. Fig. 10 (not shown) shows apparatus for carrying out the separation comprising a dust-collecting apparatus which includes a manifold 126 positioned adjacent a moving surface 120 and a powder applicator 122 to entrap powder which has become airborne, air distribution means 134 located in the manifold supplied with air by means 130, 132 to cause the powder to move towards the ends of the manifold, a respective plenum 138 adjacent each end of the manifold, the powder being exhausted from the ends of the manifold through the plenums through lines 140, 142 to blower 144 into the dustseparating apparatus 146 which includes a receptacle for containing a particulate matter entrapping liquid, a hood having an inlet to receive the air stream exhausted from the manifold, an open base and walls defining a chamber sized to assist, in use, in adjusting the velocity of the air stream to that quoted above as it exits the open base, the blood being partially wtihin but spaced from the receptacle and means for adjusting, in use, the liquid level in the receptacle to a distance of less than about 3/8 inch from the open base and a means for maintaining the liquid level at such distance.
