Abstract

1377741 Fifth wheel couplings SLAVEN TRANSPORT PRODUCTS Ltd 24 Feb 1972 [26 Feb 1971] 5501/71 Heading B7T A fifth wheel coupling comprises a plate 1<SP>1</SP> formed with a slot 17 adapted to receive a waisted kingpin 18, a jaw member 20 comprising a gripping hook portion 22 and, in a lower plane, a sensor arm 23 being pivoted on pin 24 adjacent the closed end of the slot and biased by spring 36 to an open position, the arrangement being such that when a kingpin at the correct level enters slot 17 the larger diameter lower end thereof contacts a similarly radiused surface 30 on arm 23 causing the jaw to pivot about pin 24 against spring 36, the kingpin then being retained in the slot by hook portion 22 contacting the similarly radiused waisted portion thereof and a locking member 40 released by the pivotal movement of the member 20 moving across the slot 17 to hold the hook portion in place. If the kingpin enters the slot 17 at an incorrect height the locking procedure will not function properly. The locking member 40 is biased by a spring 45 to its locking position and is guided for movement between two bars 42. To release a kingpin handle 53 is operated to move the member 40 away from slot 17 and it is retained in the non-locking position by its end 33 contacting a surface 34 on member 20.
