Abstract

1377612 Azo-pyridone dyestuffs containing cationic groups IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 Dec 1971 [4 Jan 1971] 291/71 Heading C4P Novel water-soluble azo dyestuffs free from sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups and having the formula wherein A is an aromatic (including heterocyclic) radical, X<SP>+</SP> is a cationic group containing a positively charged nitrogen, phosphorus or sulphur atom, Z- is an anion, Y is H or an optionally substituted alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical, T is a C 1-6 alkyl group and n is 1 or 2, are prepared by reaction of the corresponding 3-halomethyl-pyridones with a compound X containing an N, S or P atom convertible by alkylation into a cationic group to give products wherein the anion is a halide, followed, when other products are required, by metathesis to replace the halide ion by another anion. Such X<SP>+</SP> groups include quaternary ammonium, cyclammonium, hydrazinium, sulphonium, isothiouronium, etherified hydroxylammonium and phosphonium groups. Quaternary ammonium products may also be prepared by alkylation of the corresponding tertiary amines. The starting materials for these two processes are described respectively in Specifications 1,377,614 and 1,377,613. The novel dyestuffs are used for dyeing polymeric textile materials. 4 - Methyl - 1 - ethyl - 3 - piperidinomethyl - 5- o - nitrophenylazo - 6 - hydroxypyrid - 2 - oneis prepared from the corresponding 3-unsubstituted pyrid-2-one, piperidine and formaldehyde.
