Abstract
1377447 Copying magnetic recordings RCA CORPORATION 24 Feb 1972 [2 March 1971] 8504/72 Heading G5R A pre-recorded magnetic medium such as a tape 12 is copied on to an unrecorded magnetic medium such as a drum 26 by placing the particle layers 12a, 32 of each medium in intimate contact and heating the particles of the unrecorded layer 32 to their Curie point by means of a focused beam 36 of radiant energy, such as a laser beam, the size of the focused spot being of the same order as the largest particles of layer 32, the spot being deflected to scan the unrecorded layer 32. Layer 32 becomes magnetized by the field of recorded layer 12a upon cooling. The Curie point of the unrecorded medium should be lower than that of the recorded medium. As shown, the recorded tape 12 is driven in contact with the drum 26, to which the recording is transferred and then recorded therefrom on to a second tape 42 by an identical process. The recording is then erased from the drum 26 at 56. The spot scanning direction is transverse to the direction of motion. The substrates 30, 42b of the unrecorded media are transparent to the radiation, e.g. glass or quartz for 30, oriented polyethylene terephthalate for 42b. The particle binder, such as polyurethane, includes a darkcoloured material such as carbon black to increase radiation absorption.
