1377291 1,3,4-Trichlorobutene BB CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 27 June 1973 [18 July 1972] 33467/72 Addition to 1342536 Heading C2C 1,3,4-Trichlorobutenes are obtained by chlorinating 1-chlorobutadiene in the liquid phase with Cl 2 gas using a catalyst comprising ZnCl 2 . The chlorination is preferably performed in an inert solvent such as a halogenated hydrocarbon, e.g. CCl 4 , and in the absence of oxygen. A temperature of - 50‹ C. to + 50‹ C. is advantageous and the presence of a polymerization inhibitor is advisable.
