Abstract

1376731 Metal pipes BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd and BRITISH GAS CORP 3 March 1972 [1 April 1971] 8377/71 Heading F2P A pipe length suitable for constructing pipelines has an end portion which is more resistant to fracture propagation along the pipe than the remaining pipe portions. The end portion preferably does not exceed one third the length of the pipe. In one embodiment, a steel pipe for constructing pipe-lines to carry liquid and gaseous petroleum products is heat-treated over the end portion and cooled to re-orientate the crystal structure of the iron. Alternatively, a length of pipe which is more resistant to fracture propagation may be welded to the pipe end. The additional pipe section may also be of steel but with a crystal orientation, at an angle of 70 to 90 degrees to the pipe axis, or it may comprise a different metal, e.g. a tougher alloy. The pipeline may include such pipes interposed between sections of other pipes.
